At Stratton Exteriors we love renovating old homes. Consider this urban farmhouse in Inglewood.

If you’re not familiar with the neighborhood of Inglewood, it’s northeast of downtown Nashville and takes its name from a subdivision called Inglewood Place, which was developed in the first quarter of the twentieth century.

We gutted the house down to the studs, knocked down walls, and excavated more than 70 tons of rock. Now it offers 3,500 usable square feet, with a full basement, workout room, and two-car garage.

As for the front entryway, it features a modern glass door befitting an early twentieth century farmhouse. The glass door is complemented by:

  • 8” x 8” cedar columns
  • Modern-looking railings
  • The front porch, with its 1” x 6” tongue-in-groove look and recessed lights

From the front, you can also see some of the home’s all-new, energy-efficient Architect Series windows. Then, when you walk in the front door you find beautiful, eight-inch, hard pine floors that were salvaged from an old warehouse in North Carolina.

We also added a back porch, featuring the antique brick you see around the hot tub, which is also incorporated around and into the detached screen room.

Notably, too, the stair rails leading up to the second floor are from the original home, with the posts coming from The Preservation Station in the 12 South area. This gives the house a classic look, especially in combination with the living room’s vaulted ceilings, which are shiplapped and feature recessed lights with Edison warm glow bulbs.

All the light fixtures are from Restoration Hardware, and skylights allow an abundance of natural light into the house, which is evident in the photos, by Jessie Sheran Photography. See gallery below.

Custom kitchen remodel

We also love the fully renovated kitchen, which can best be described as “modern with a rustic twist.” It’s a look that will never go out of style.

Notice how the wood plays well with the white subway tile and alabaster white Shaker cabinets, not to mention the island, which includes:

  • An 8’ x 10’ butcher block surface
  • A large Kohler apron-front sink,
  • A Rohl brass faucet, the proverbial icing on the cake

In case you’re wondering about the color of the island, it’s Mount Etna, a Sherwin-Williams color, and the backside of the island includes additional storage for all baking and cooking needs.

You’ll also notice how all of the hardware and holds are brass, and that the countertop is white marble, which helps to brighten up the kitchen. The subway tile has a darker grout—darker so that it matches the feel of the original home—and the shelves are reclaimed wood.

Last but not least, the kitchen also includes high-end Thermador appliances, including the refrigerator and gas stove.

Finally, a few notes about the master bath. It has a great cohesion of color with the antique brick floor matched with all-black marble—and white veining that matches the marble—all accentuated by the brass of the Rohl plumbing fixtures.

This urban farmhouse is a shining example of what we can do with an old or historic home. A seamless design, combined with the highest quality materials and select elements from the original house, all contribute to the overall aesthetic of the final result.
