flagstone patio nashville

The word “flagstone” is getting thrown around a lot at Stratton Exteriors right now. Not only did we just install a flagstone patio in the front and back of the house we’re flipping in Inglewood (more on that soon!), but we laid a gorgeous flagstone front porch at a historic home in Nashville’s 12 South neighborhood.

Flagstone (also called “patio rock”) is a favorite of ours because it’s super versatile and can be used to lay a path atop soil (without mortar and usually surrounded by pea gravel or something similar) as well as to craft custom porches (with mortar). The first type of project is a great DIY, but the latter is best left to professionals if you want something that will last and look flawless. Flagstone is usually irregularly shaped but can be sawn to specific sizes, and a good sealant will prevent it from staining.

Besides mosaic-like porches, patios, and pathways, flagstone can be used to build organic-looking fire pits, steps, low seating walls, and retaining walls. The options are pretty endless.
