We can’t stop thinking about porches and decks around here. Summer’s so far behind us that we’ve forgotten about the mosquitos that plaque Nashville, and spring is just near enough that we’re already plotting the best way to spruce up a weather-beaten porch or deck for enjoying the balmy months ahead. Here are some of our favorite porch and deck ideas:
Paint stripes on your front porch. We blogged a couple of weeks ago about how much we like the idea of painting an area rug onto a deck, but this idea of painting stripes on the front porch might trump that one. Using restraint with your color choices, like the cream and beige pictured here, will keep this playful porch idea from looking too zany or annoying your neighbors. This blogger spaced her stripes 12 inches apart, alternating white paint with Benjamin Moore’s “Manchester Tan,” then going over all of it with two coats of water-based Varthane. Build a combination deck and playhouse: If you are perhaps in need of both a new deck and a fabulous playhouse, why not combine the two to maximize your space and thrill your kids? The one pictured below is a favorite, with a slide that cascades directly off the deck into a super-sized sandbox. Source: GardenPhotos.com
Accessorize. Most people only think of “accessorizing” their porches around Halloween and Christmas, but they’re really awesome places to personalize year around. Outside of a nursery, your porch and deck are the two best places to really have fun with decor. You may want to consider abiding loosely by a nautical or coastal “theme.” Farmhouse-style or rustic furniture works great on porches, too. Source: Centsational Girl
Consider outdoor curtains. If you need privacy or shade but don’t like the look of lattice, outdoor curtains might wonders for your porch or deck. The blogger below used PVC pipe and coated it with a metallic spraypaint to hang her curtains. Source: Our Vintage Home Love
Look up. Your porch’s ceiling is a great place to focus your attention, whether you paint it a dreamy blue or stripe it (like the photo below). You may also want to think outside the box in terms of lighting, looking beyond the outdoor light selection at Lowe’s and Home Depot for unexpected choices, like a chandelier or funky mason jar light.
