Purchasing an older house has its perks. It’s usually less expensive than building new – resulting in more bang for your buck – and it oftentimes has unique character that newer homes simply lack. However, one downside to older homes is they may not have been updated in several years or sometimes, even decades. Oftentimes, we as homeowners become so accustomed to our surroundings that we fail to realize that our home’s décor, fixtures, etc. are incredibly out of date. Here are 4 ways to instantly bring your home up to date, whether you are looking to sell, have recently purchased, or simply want an upgrade.

  1. Revamp or replace brass fixtures – Sadly, shiny brass fixtures that were oh-so-popular in the 80’s and 90’s have since been classified as a ‘designer don’t’ for your home’s interior. Luckily, replacing hardware and fixtures such as door knobs, faucets, and lighting is a relatively easy task. And to save extra dollars, consider simply repainting them in a more up-to-date color or finish.
  2. Re-stain oak – much like our friend brass, light colored oak had its resurgence two decades ago. Consider stripping and refinishing light oak touches such as banisters and built-ins a darker, more current stain. You’ll be surprised at what a different it will make.
  3. Fireplace Facelift – Although exposed brick can be very modern and quite lovely, it can also quickly date a home’s living area. Consider lightening up the room and paint over the brick. While you’re at it, check out the mantel. Can you upgrade the wood (see above) or perhaps make it bigger? In addition, look into replacing the stone surrounding the fireplace – both around and in front of.
  4. Carpet – One doesn’t have to have grown up in the 60’s to know that shag carpet is out of date. Replacing dingy, old, or oddly colored carpet can completely revamp a space. If you’re lucky and there is wood underneath, great! Take advantage and have it restored to have value added to your home. If not, look to replace the carpet with a current option.

Little things can make a big difference when it comes to bringing your home’s décor into this century. Don’t think you have to spend the big bucks to make a big impact. If you have any questions regarding any interior or exterior home updates, give Stratton Exteriors a call – we’re happy to help!
