Top Patio Materials: Which One Should You Choose? Part 1 | Stratton Exteriors

Outdoor spaces are more important than ever before, especially when it comes to boosting home value. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Realtors® revealed that a new patio was among homeowners’ most desired outdoor renovations. The same report placed new patios in the top 5 for outdoor renovations that add value to a home.

In addition to a boost in home value, a new patio provides families with a place to relax, entertain friends and enjoy the outdoors. There’s really no downside–except perhaps the stress of deciding how your patio will look, if it will be covered or uncovered, and how big it will be. If you’ve decided to add a patio to your home, you probably also have questions about which materials are best.

Like any home renovation project, the answer depends on your budget, your tastes and your expectations.

Stratton Exteriors has been helping Nashville homeowners design and build incredible patios for over a decade. During that time, we’ve worked with multiple materials and discovered the pros and cons of each.

Keep reading for a rundown of the patio materials we use (and like) the most.

Reclaimed Brick Pavers

Is there anything quite like a brick paver patio? At once rustic and sophisticated, a brick patio can transform your home’s outdoor area into an oasis. Reclaimed brick pavers are especially charming, since they’re usually pulled and repurposed from historic buildings or locations. Reclaimed brick has a unique appearance, not at all manufactured or factory-measured. These historic bricks have unique markings and features, making them a one-of-a-kind option for a truly unique patio.

Flagstone

A flagstone patio is a classic: natural, beautiful and durable. Flagstone is ideal for a patio because of its unique permeability. The stone allows water to run through rather than pool on top. Flagstone is an ideal material for foot traffic because of its dimensional shape and surface. Plus, the earthy tones available (browns, tans, blues and even reds) provide your patio with a warmth that other materials don’t.

Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is a gorgeous option for a patio, especially if you’re looking for something crisp and clean-looking. Because stamped concrete is poured onsite, it’s more customizable than other stone patio materials. Plus, stamped concrete is exceptionally durable. It holds under the weight of heavy foot traffic, patio furniture, fire pits and fixtures. It also resists sinking and is easy to clean.
