Here’s How To Choose The Right Kitchen Faucet. | Stratton Exteriors

We’ve talked before about the importance of choosing the right materials for bathroom fixtures. From aesthetics to durability to performance, your bathroom’s hardware and materials will have a huge impact on its performance (and its looks).

The same goes for your kitchen.

For instance, the style and material of the kitchen faucet you choose will affect your kitchen space for years to come.

Developments in materials and technology have made clogged, rusted, corroded faucets a thing of the past–if you choose the right model.

Why Is Your Kitchen Faucet Important?

Faucets are kind of the unsung heroes of the kitchen.

Sure, your stove, refrigerator and countertops are more visually stunning. Yes, the cabinetry gets a lot of attention from your guests. But your kitchen faucet (and by extension, all your kitchen’s hardware) serves a very important purpose.

Your faucet is the most used appliance in your kitchen. That’s right–you’ll use it even more than your fridge or oven. It’s also in a central area in the kitchen, and is responsible for helping you clean, prepare meals, cook and maintain your sink. Your faucet will be splashed with acidic and hot foods, sticky foods and beverages and plenty of crumbs. It will also contribute to your home’s overall water usage. A faucet with an aerator and water-conserving technology will help you save money and lessen your home’s overall waste.

Determine the Features You Need

Do you want a pull-down sprayer or a conventional sprayer? Do you want a motion sensor for touchless activation? Are you set on a faucet in a certain material like brushed nickel or chrome?

Make a list of the features you need, the features you want and those that are mere luxuries.

Then go back to the drawing board, and really think about how you’ll actually use your faucet.

Consider where it will be installed. Is there a cabinet directly above your sink? Be careful not to choose a faucet that’s too tall to be used comfortably. If you have a large sink, make sure your sprayer can extend far enough to clean any dishes comfortably.

Think about using your faucet every single day, multiple times per day. Which features are most important to you? Which features will make your life easier and more convenient? Invest in a faucet that has those features–and try not to compromise.

Finally, try to choose a faucet material that matches the look of the hardware on your cabinetry and storage areas. It’s a small bit of design cohesion that goes a long way towards making your kitchen more aesthetically pleasing.

Choose a Material That’s Easy to Clean

Everyone needs a faucet that’s easy to clean.

Because your kitchen sink is located in an area filled with food, heat, and dirty dishes, messes are bound to happen. Water spots, smudges, food splatters, you name it–they can all make your faucet and sink look dirty and grimy in the blink of an eye.

A faucet finish that’s easy to wipe down to a shine, however, will help keep your kitchen looking presentable.

Which faucet materials are easiest to clean, you ask?

  • Chrome
  • Brushed Nickel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Solid Brass

Luckily, these materials are also the most durable and resistant to oxidation (also known as corrosion). In fact, the materials we mentioned above are the highest rated for scratch and stain resistance.

Like most things in home remodeling and renovation,  a faucet that looks great, performs great and lasts for years takes a little investment. But we have a feeling you’ll think it’s worth the extra money a few years down the line.
