5 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient | Stratton Exteriors

Being more environmentally conscience seems to be on everyone’s mind nowadays. From our cars, to our homes, to the food we eat, everything is becoming a little bit more “green” and better for our planet. And when it comes to the place we spend the most time – our house – there are an abundance of ways to make it more efficient and in turn, reap significant savings over time. Here are 5 ways to make your home more energy efficient:

  1. Go low-flow – Older toilets are a significant waste of water. Invest in updated, water conserving toilets that can save almost two-thirds of the water of a standard toilet. Upgrade and you could and save hundreds of gallons of water each month.
  2. Insulate – if your home is poorly insulated, it’s going to have a difficult retaining cool and warm air as the seasons change. Re-insulate your home so you don’t have to run your heat and air as often.
  3. Programmable thermostat – Designed to adjust your home’s temperature according to the time of day, a programmable thermostat can save you significantly over time without you having to lift a finger.
  4. Invest in a cooler roof – A ‘cool’ roof is one that significantly reflects the sun’s rays thereby keeping it cooler than a standard roof. This effect, in turn, reduces the amount of heat absorbed into your home saving you on your energy bills over time.
  5. Windows – Much of our home’s air leaches out our windows – especially if they are old. Double paned, energy efficient windows are one of the biggest money savers over time. In addition, new windows can increase the property value to your home.

Although most of these options have upfront costs, be sure to remember that over time you benefit from the energy savings. In addition to lower monthly bills and possible tax breaks, you can rest assured knowing that you are doing your part to help the environment. If you have questions regarding any of the above options for your home, or you are looking to make your house a little bit “greener”, give Stratton Exteriors a ring. We’d be happy to help.
