After years of working in marketing and advertising, Shane Stratton wanted to do something completely different.

So, the Cleveland Park resident returned to an old passion: remodeling homes.

"My grandfather was always fixing things around his house and rentals, and I wanted to be there to help when he would repair drywall, build a deck or install windows," Stratton said. "I've renovated a few homes that I have lived in over the years and really enjoyed doing the work myself. It has been, and still is, a learning experience."

Living off his savings, Stratton started looking for remodeling work. After completing several renovations, and having some less-than-favorable experiences with contractors, Stratton started Stratton Exteriors in 2006.

"We design and build custom decks, fences, sunrooms, screen rooms, roofs, pergolas, install windows and siding, gutters and gutter protection," Stratton said. "We also do garages and full-room additions.

"Most of our business comes from the installation of windows, siding and decks. The No. 1 return on your investment for the exterior is windows. They not only save you money on your energy costs but they also make your home look so much nicer inside and out."

In hard economic times, some may see the installation of a deck or fence as a luxury.

But Stratton believes such an addition not only adds value to a home, but also provides an outdoor living space.

"I have always enjoyed outdoor living areas," Stratton said. "It's a great place for entertaining or just hanging out with your family and friends grilling out. Outdoor living spaces add enjoyment, and a great place to gather."

In five years, Stratton envisions the company doing the same kind of work, but becoming more well-known and sought after.

"I think we'll continue to evolve into being the remodeling company that people come to because they know we can design and create something for them that is unique to their home and their personality," Stratton said.
