Most Common Types of Tiles for Your Home | Stratton Exteriors

Selecting a tile for your home can be a difficult decision. With so many options and an extensive range of colors and shapes, tiles are a great way to add a unique touch to your bathroom or kitchen. But how do you select the best material for the job? See below for a detailed look at the most common types of tiles for your home:

Ceramic – Made from clay and other minerals, ceramic tiles are very common in homes as they are durable, inexpensive, and can be virtually any color or texture. They can be created using a few different methods but are typically molded and pressed or baked at high heat.

Porcelain – Similar to ceramic tiles, porcelain is also made from clay but includes a mixture of feldspar as well. Porcelain tiles can be more expensive than ceramic but offer a more durable, stain-resistant product.

Natural Stone – This type of tile can come from virtually any stone but are most commonly cut from granite, marble, limestone, slate, or travertine. The strength and durability of each stone varies and you’ll want to do your research depending on which room you are looking to tile. The variety is astounding as colors and textures change naturally from quarry to quarry.

Mosaic – Smaller tiles, usually a square inch or smaller are used as mosaic tiles. The small size allows room for a design within the flooring or the use of several different colors to add some flair to your bathroom or backsplash. These types of tiles are becoming trendier in bathrooms as designers are picking up that smaller spaces look larger with smaller tiles.

Choosing the best tile option for your home doesn’t have to be as daunting as you may think. Deciding which material you would like to use beforehand will help narrow down the search later on.
